OVERVIEW

During Summer 2023, I collaborated with a design team to redesign the Radical X AI Arcade Manager. This platform provides users with a personalized AI assistant to help them select online courses tailored to their skills and interests.

MY ROLE

As a UX design intern, I joined a team of four other interns to redesign a critical feature for Radical X. My focus was on crafting a homepage that showcased all active classes and skills that users were participating in and learning, like CSS and JavaScript, in an intuitive and engaging way. The goal was to help users keep track of of their current courses and discover new classes aligned with their interests while clearly presenting the certification they’d earn upon completion. My design ensured a seamless learning journey, from exploration to achievement. My team and I began by conducting competitive analysis, developing personas, and mapping user flows. We then progressed to designing low- and high-fidelity prototypes, which we delivered at the end of the internship, ensuring a seamless handoff to designers.

BRAINSTORMING

We began by researching learning and educational platforms to analyze their user interfaces. Our goal was to identify what features they offered, what was missing, and how AI assistants were incorporated into lessons. I found Uxcel’s course overview page particularly inspiring for its clean and minimalistic layout, though it lacked an AI assistant—a key tool we needed to include in our design.

I created a 'Customization' section in our Affinity Map, where I categorized observations made by my teammates about features on other websites. Specifically, I grouped elements related to allowing users to customize their avatars into a single category for better analysis.

PERSONAS AND
USER FLOWS

Next, we designed a proto-persona for a user learning programming skills. This helped us better understand their needs and brainstorm solutions to address their pain points.

Using insights from the competitive analysis, my team created a user flow to map the steps the persona would take to successfully complete a course on the website. This process ensured our design addressed the user’s journey effectively.

WIREFRAMING AND PROTOTYPING

Working within a team of designers, we each focused on specific components of the Arcade Manager. My next steps involved creating a low-fidelity prototype of the home page, guided by the information architecture map developed by a teammate. Drawing inspiration from educational websites, I designed two low-fidelity screens for the course overview page in Figma, iterating on one after receiving feedback from lead designers. The header, including the company logo and other features, were pre-designed by senior designers.

Designing the certificate document was one of the smaller yet more personalized tasks I handled. I created a mid-fidelity prototype, adhering to the design system for consistent colors and aesthetics. The goal was to ensure a clean, minimalist design that made it easy for users to locate and download their document. After iterating twice based on feedback, I finalized the design and delivered the completed screen.

EVALUATION AND REFLECTION

As my first design internship, particularly at a startup, I felt my contributions were truly valued. While I didn’t conduct user research or usability testing, I gained a solid understanding of key design steps like creating personas, mapping user flows, and designing based on those artifacts. This experience pushed me out of my comfort zone, especially when integrating an AI chatbot into a learning platform. Collaborating with a diverse team of designers broadened my perspective, and overall, this internship significantly enhanced my skills as a designer!
